20,000 Daily Cases — Possible?

The answer is yes, according to Dr. Kumitaa Theva Das (picture attached), a virologist at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang who warned that Covid-19 infections could reach 20,000 a day within the next two weeks while the number of deaths was likely to hit 200 a day.

This estimation is due to the rising number of cases caused by the more infectious Delta variant, which is close to overtaking other variants. The country's healthcare system is already at its brink.and more deaths are expected to occur if the system is unable to cope and buckles under pressure.

According to Dr. Kumitaa, the virus is spreading at an exponential rate as new variants such as Delta evolve to transmit faster and is highly infectious. A Beta-variant virus would be able to replicate five cases in four days, but the Delta variant spreads at a more rapid rate and would take just one day to create five new cases.

Data from 64 countries shows that a person with the Delta strain had a 97% chance of infecting others in comparison to the older strains. If the previous virus was transmitting from one person to two, the Delta variant would transmit to four people.

What is our take on this? It would be to take the warning of professionals such as Dr. Kumitaa seriously and to take all necessary precautions so that we do not add ourselves to the statistics!
