Hunger drives a gang of hungry monkeys to fight amongst themselves in Thailand. Regularly feeding the monkeys is a popular activity for locals and tourists alike. As a result of their reliance on human food, these animals are ill-prepared to survive a pandemic when it strikes Thailand.
Since the monkeys are accustomed to eating endless amounts of sugary treats and food, the recent lockdown imposed on the country coupled with travel bans and an increased proportion of people staying home means they are once again in danger of starvation.
Consequently, they have been seen as more aggressive to survive, striking humans for food. Their hunger caused them to intrude on buildings and drive people out of their homes.
A similar mass monkey brawl erupted over food in March last year when two gangs from opposite sides of a railway track began fighting. This incident would seem to be a sequel to the one that occurred this week.
This viral video shows two rival tribes of monkeys fighting in front of a Buddhist temple in Thailand. One group was chased away on a nearby road before another was able to make its escape.
Officials have also tried to control the number of monkeys by rolling out mass sterilization programs.
A government veterinarian said: 'The monkeys are so used to having tourists feed them and the city provides no space for them to fend for themselves. Since the pandemic, the monkeys have often gone hungry, causing their ferociousness when searching for food for themselves and their young."
