Samantha Katie James, former Miss Universe Malaysia 2017, gathered attention on Instagram for a post on her refusal to wear a face mask.
On her account @samanthakayty, the outspoken model wrote: that she and her friend looked "cute" while being "surrounded by everyone with their masks on" and that they were "spreading light and sovereignty everywhere" by doing so. “I will NEVER wear that fuckin diaper on my face unless of course I use it to be undercover around annoying people,” she exclaimed towards the end of her rambling post.
Samantha also said that a guy who walked past her pulled his mask off and crunched it in his hand. Her friend @Miza.Shaid who also appeared in the selfie without a face mask, also echoed her sentiments in the comments, saying: "Oh yeah baby !! and that couple that stripped off their mask right after passing us by, was epic !!”
This was not the first time that Samantha has been in the limelight for the wrong reasons. She had caused controversy last year for allegedly downplaying the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in the United States in the aftermath of George Floyd's death. She said that those who were protesting against racism and police brutality should “relax, embrace it as a challenge, and accept it for what it is" as they were born in America as coloured people o learn a lesson.
To her credit, Samantha did issue an apology subsequently for her inappropriate comments and agreed that they should have been articulated in a more proper manner.
