Tourism, arts and culture minister Nancy Shukri announced that the resort island of Langkawi is expected to be the first tourist destination to be reopened in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Langkawi, with a population of 119,000, is known as the jewel of Kedah and is the first choice for the tourism sector as herd immunity has been achieved and also due to its closed location which makes it easier to control and manage.
The ministry had postponed the initial target date of Sept 1 for the reopening of tourism in Langkawi because of the sharp rise of Covid-19 cases.
Nancy emphasized that full vaccination will be the main criteria for travellers and hoped that tourists would comply with the new rules in this focused and concentrated area. With the implementation of such new tourism strategies in line with current challenges, a rise in socio-economic prospects and conditions of the local residents is very much looked forward to.
